"Asian" eyes: Maybe she's born with it, Maybe it's Maybelline.

Please skip this post if you don't want to hear me rant.

Which continent's eyes were you born with? African? American? Hmmm...maybe Asian? What do African eyes look like? I don't know, but I can tell you what Asian eyes look like:

Yep! According to the people at Maybelline, that's what "Asian" eyes look like. Do they look familiar to you? Have you seen them before? Here, let me help trigger your memory.

The infamous "Chinky eyes" taunt, experienced at least once by every East Asian person living in a non East Asian country, has been given the official Maybelline stamp of approval.
Yes folks, Maybelline concurs with all those playground bullys who used to walk up to you, pulled up the outer corners of their eyes with their index fingers and claimed that they could blindfold you with a piece of dental floss because you have "Chinky eyes".
Feeding into a discrimatory stereotype much?
According to Maybelline, all Asians have eyes with "a distinctive lift at the outer corners and very little lid". Yes, this applies to ALL Asian people, including Indian, Indonesian, Phillippino, Nepalese, Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Yemenese, Israelian, Lebonese, Turkish, Iranian....need I go on? Do they even realise how many different countries and nationalities fall under Asian?

Hello Aishwarya, you don't have Asian eyes!!! You must not be Asian!!!

I don't know how this works really, are you Asian if you have those eyes, or is an Asian person no longer Asian if they don't have Asian eyes? Here are my eyes, no glue, no tape, no surgery, no makeup:

I'm probably biased, but to me, they look more like these:

Does this mean that I'm not Asian or my eyes aren't Asian? Does hailing from the Asian continent mean that you're automatically preclude from having "Centered eyes that are one eye-length apart and have uniform features."?
I wouldn't have such a big problem with this if they had choices for say, European eyes, African eyes, and American eyes. Why are all the other choices based on the physical characteristics of your eye, and then they suddenly have one based on a continent? Did someone at Maybelline headquarters just not bother to look up how many different eye shapes people from the Asian continent has? It's like as if they had listed different types of noses, high bridged, flattened tip, wide based, upturned and then "American". Would you find have found that offensive? Do we not deserve to choose based on the physical attributes of our eyes? It's as if by belonging to a certain continent, we can only have 1 eye type, and hey sorry for you, but that happens to be Chinky eyes.

This is my boycott, I went through my makeup stash and isolated every Maybelline product I owned, and I put it right where I think their company and its generalisations should go, straight into the bin. I know it's not much, heck it's only 2 mascaras, but I need to drive my message home. Further, I shall never purchase their products again.
Maybelline, shame on you!

Edit:  As of this post's publish date, Maybelline has changed the descriptions on their website. This is what it currently looks like:

I have no bloody clue what shapes eyes come in other than "Almond", but hey it's a whole lot better than slanty eyes. Maybe there's people out there with square eyes.
If you want to see what the original website descriptions looked like prior to the change, please head over to my friend Rasilla's post where she has taken a video documenting the original site. She's the one who discovered this atrocity in the first place, and she's also the one who sent COUNTLESS correspondence to the unresponsive Maybelline reps in an attempt to bring this to their attention.  Read her post with the frustrating e-mail exchange.
End rant.

Nunu's Kitchen - Oxtail Borscht

Food I make!

Question: do you people actually read the intro paragraphs that I begin my recipes with?
*creek, creek*
...
Fine. Onto the recipe then.
Nobody loves me!! T.T

Oxtail Borscht - feeds 2 for a week...

You will need:

  • 3-4 large pieces of oxtail
  • 2 Celery sticks - diced
  • 2 small carrots - peeled and diced
  • 5-6 baby potatoes - diced
  • 1/2 large onion/1 medium - diced
  • 398ml can diced tomatoes
  • Half of the tiniest red cabbage you can find!! - mine was about twice the size of my fist, chop finely.
  • Olive oil
  • 1 tsp Caraway seeds
  • 2 tsp Bay leaves
  • 1.5 tsp salt
  • Lemon juice
  • 1 small bunch dill - minced half and set half aside for decoration later.

  • Beef Broth (I ended up not using this....xD)

La Methode:
  • In a 5qt pot, bring about 2.5qt water to boil, and throw in your oxtail.
  • Let simmer for approx 45mins and scoop up any scum that appears. The WORST scum of the Universe!!!
  • Put some olive oil into a pan/wok, and saute together your celery, carrot, onions and potatoes with the caraway seeds, bay leaf and salt. Saute until soft NOT yellow!
  • Add sauted veggies to oxtail pot.
  • Add them beets. FOREWARNING! BEETS STAIN LIKE A MOFO!!! WEAR YOUR BF'S SHIRT WHEN HANDLING THEM!!!!
  • Add chopped cabbage. I failed chopping.

  • Add diced tomatoes. If you like some extra texture, dice up some fresh tomatoes and add them in.
  • Add a dash of lemon juice and some finely minced dill.
  • Put heat onto lowest setting and simmer until SO comes home.
  • Serve with a dollop of sour cream, the rest of the dill and some crusty bread.
  • Wait for SO to grovel at your feet.

Cargo 50% off haul and The Body Shop blush review

OMG. I finally do a beauty related post. I'm sure all my beauty readers have long abandoned me as this was turning more and more into a cooking blog >.<
Don't leave!!! I promise I'll do more beauty posts!!!
So by now I'm sure everyone knows that Cargo is pulling out of Sephora stores and thus all their products have been reduced to 50% of their regular price. Being Asian, a good deal pulled me in even though I've officially declared Sephora to be the root of all evil.
So what did I buy?(so far)

This!

Cargo Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Barcelona.
A look inside.

Swatches

Sephora describes the colours as: Shimmering Periwinkle; Matte Royal Purple; Matte Vibrant Violet and a Pale Teal Sheen. I'm unedumacated so I'm probably wrong, but I didn't find any of the colours in the palette to be 'matte' in any way. Their finish reminded me more of MAC's veluxe pearls. All four colours carried an equal amount of..er...sheen? damn I am just not in the know how to describe colours and finishes! Although you can't see it, the teal contains a gold shimmer which is so pretty in the light!! The royal blue is gorgeous too, although I have absolutely no idea where I'd wear that to =.=". Yes I'm extremely guilty of buying things which I have no intention of using hee! The packing is a bit bulkier than what I'd like, but I do love the clear lucite and the huge mirror included. At $14 it's a steal, I'm gonna go back tomorrow and pick up a couple more but definitely in more subdued colours xD.

On another note, a couple of you seem to be interested in the blushes I picked up from The Body Shop, so I thought I'd do a some swatches and do a mini review.

Let's start with the marblized blush trio, I got mine in Warm Sunset. Size wise, it's quite a lot bigger than a standard MAC blush and is approx the same size as a MAC Shape & Sculpt powder.

A closer look, swirled together is a light peachy pink, a ruddy red orange and a dirty brownish bronze (can you tell I suck with describing colours?)

Swatches: From the left: 1. mixed together; 2. lightest colour; 3. medium colour; 4. darkest colour.

Closeup of the mixed colour.

As you can see from the swatches, these blushes are really pigmented. You really have to apply with a light hand and blend like crazy, otherwise you'll end up with clown cheeks lol. They remind me of MAC msfs with a lot more pigmentation, and none of the frostiness. For me, this would be more of a "summer" colour, as I dislike peachy tones during the winter months because it looks really fake on me when I have no tan. I prefer cool pinks during winter to give that 'flushed from the cold' look xD.
The second blush I got from The Body Shop is their Roseflower blush in Fuschia.

Smells just like roses. No seriously, it's rose scented! but the scent is light enough not to be grandmotherly.

Swatches

It reminded me of a slighty pinker version of NARS Super Orgasm actually, with the large flecks of gold glitter. Nunu no likey Super Orgasm, thankfully the glitter is just from the overspray used in the rose pattern and would soon disappear. It's not full on shimmer, yet it's not matte, it's got a bit of a glowy sheen to it.

On mah cheeks!Really natural, just the type of flushed from the cold look I like during winter!

Roseflower blush with Dior Rose Diamond skin shimmer as highlight. @.@ glowy! Excuse the spot on my cheek, we've been eating hot pot lately n I've got hot pot face, but c'mon this was my bare face with zero foundation and cover up! I owe it all to the My Beauty Diary masks that I've been using every 2nd night. It's still the shizniz!

And that's it for my round up of Body Shop blushes. I hope I've encouraged some of you to spend some money xD.
Ta.
