African Violet FOTD

So it appears that I haven't done a purple FOTD yet on this here blog. SHOCKING!! Must be remedied immediately!!
Other than being my favourite colour, purple is also universally flattering and I've been told by various beauty industry insiders that it will be THE colour this Autumn.
I used the Stila In The Moment palette that I reviewed back in this post.

Products used:
Eyes:
  • Lise Watier Crayon Jumbo in Peche Melba as all over base;
  • Stila Instinct (top row first from left) all over lid;

  • Blend;
  • Improvise on outer half of lower lash line;

The Body Shop Vitamin E Moisture Serum Review

What they say:

I shamelessly copied & pasted the following extracts from TBS's website.

"The tara bush, also known as the spiny holdback bush, is native to Peru, where it grows in a semi-arid environment with scarce water. The seed of this plant contains all the moisture that it needs to germinate, without relying on rainfall. Its ability to survive in extremely dry conditions makes it an ideal active ingredient in our pre-moisturizer serum, where it helps skin retain moisture and continuously hydrates for up to 12 hours. What’s more, scientific tests have proven that using our pre-moisturizer with either our Vitamin E day cream or night cream significantly increases their moisturizing effect.

Best if you want to: Smooth and refine your skin with a concentrated pre-moisturizer that also protects it from harmful environmental elements.

How it works:
  • Vitamin E, wheat germ oil and rice bran oil help moisturize, nourish and condition skin, while protecting against premature aging and environmental aggressors.
  • Tara bush seed extract helps promote both immediate and long-term hydration.
  • Organic Community Trade honey moisturizes and conditions the skin.
Water, Cyclomethicone, Glycerin, PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Propylene Glycol, Phenoxyethanol, Dimethicone, Honey, Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Caesalpinia Spinosa Gum, Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer, Oryza Sativa (Rice) Bran Oil, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Oil, Xanthan Gum, Methylparaben, Fragrance, Sodium Hydroxide, Avena Strigose Seed Extract, Lecithin, Disodium EDTA, Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Benzyl Benzoate, Isobutylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylphenyl Methylpropional, Geraniol, Linalool, Potassium Sorbate, Citronellol, Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone. "

What I say:

I picked this up during the last TBS 3 for $30 sale along with some backups of my HG face cream (TBS Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream and the Nourishing Night Cream reviewed here ). It is a pre-moisturiser serum, and is meant to be used in conjunction with your usual moisturiser to give its moisturising properties an extra boost.
I generally wash my face twice a day, once in the morning with a cream cleanser and once at night with a deep cleanser (will do reviews soon!), and although both cleansers are pretty mild and won't leave my skin feeling tight, I feel that it makes my skin TOO squeaky clean if that makes any sense? and squeaky clean skin does not like cold Vancouver air. Not to mention, squeaky clean skin translates into "ok go nuts!" in sebaceous gland language T.T.
I like to apply my moisturiser immediately prior to applying my foundation, I find that my foundation spreads easier that way and I get a lighter coverage, however, I also dislike going about with that "squeaky clean skin in the cold" feeling until such time as I put on moisturiser, my solution? this serum.
Let the photos explain.

Formula feels like a watery gel. Pay attention to the lines and wrinkles on my skin.

Easy to spread and quickly absorbed by the skin.

Leaves your skin soft, lines are less visible as the skin has been plumped up.

As you can see from the photos, the serum plumps the skin thus making all the fine lines and wrinkles appear less visible. On the face, it gets rid of that "squeaky clean" feeling and adds some light moisture. Although the moisture it adds is by no ways enough (at least in winter conditions) it is enough to last me through getting dressed, some breakfast, styling and drying my hair and brushing my teeth. After that, my real moisturiser goes on xD.
Does it help my skin retain moisture for 12 hours or increase the moisturising effect of my day or night cream? I honestly can't tell for certain xD because my moisturiser alone is enough to keep my skin hydrated and moisturised for more than 12 hours, I really only use this to keep my skin moist between cleansing and my moisturiser, and for that it definitely does the job! I'm interested to see whether it'll be a sufficient moisturiser on its own during the summer months. Hmm will keep you guys posted!

Damage: C$20 for 30ml, and before you comment on the price, let me show you this photo:

See the date written in blue ink on the bottom of the label? That's the date I started using it, 08 December, 2009. I initially used it both morning and night, but for the past 2 months or so, I've cut it down to morning use only because I don't really need it at night. This means that one bottle has lasted me for almost 4 months and I still have about 1cm of the product left in the bottle. Deal!! Besides you can always wait until their sale xD
All in all, it's a "Yes!" from me and a definite re-purchase!

In other news....

SOY MILK IS EVIL!!!!!
Why you ask? Because it did this to me:

T.T
Vitasoy was on special and we stocked up like mad, I drank one every day for breakfast and it gave me GINORMOUS, GIGANTIC, MONSTROUS, HUMONGOUS spots T.T
I'm pretty sure it's not from anything else because I haven't changed anything in my beauty regime, it wasn't that time of the month, and I haven't broken out like this in a long long long time!
I don't know how reliable Acne.org threads are, but on a Google search, I ran across several dozen posts about soy milk causing breakouts. Any of you ladies experienced this?
Le sigh, I guess the bare face MBD review will have to wait :(

These are a few of my favourite things...

1. My Beauty Diary Black Pearl Masks
"How do I love thee? let me count the ways. I love thee to the depth and breadth and height my soul can reach when feeling out of sight."
Liz Browning didn't have these in her days, but if they did, I wonder how they'd compare to her feelings for Bob Browning?
Seriously, I LOVE these. I'm on my upteenth box, they're dirt cheap, they're convenient and most importantly, they work.
Long time readers will recall the 10 day challenge that I did with these masks. For ease of reference, here are the photos from the challenge:

BEFORE: Dehydration, uneven skin tone, dullness, enlarged pores, redness, you name it I had it. My skin has pretty much been like this for as long as I remember, it's never been problem free, and the combination of indoor heat and freezing weather probably exacerbated it.  I also scar really easily, so pimples usually leave behind a nice dark mark, which would be around long after it has healed.

AFTER: This is the closest to PERFECT skin I've ever been. I can actually go out without makeup, and children will not run from me screaming.  The redness and swelling are gone, my skin tone has evened out, and  my skin is also brighter and noticeably more plumped up than before. Scars from old break outs have also lightened considerably.
I've been using these masks on a regular basis for about 4 months now, and I've gone from a MAC NC25 to a NC20, so there is definitely some whitening effect to them.
I now use these masks about 2-3 nights a week, I'll wash my face as usual, slap the mask on, read a book for an hour, take it off, rub the excess serum into my face and then moisturise as usual. In the morning I'll wake up with baby skin.
The Beauty Diary Mask range is huge, however, the majority of their ingredients are the same, and would thus probably give the same effect. My own personal preference is for the the black pearl or the pearl powder ones as I feel they are more saturated with serum than say, the Bulgarian rose one, which dries up around the 10-15 min mark on my face. The apple one did sting my skin a tiny bit, apparently that means the AHA is working, but I find that it didn't give me any extra results that the black pearl wasn't giving me. My olfactory nerves did not agree with the Red Wine or the Sake ones, it reminds me of how I'd smell once the exams were out back in university.
I'm currently taking the premium masks for a test drive, I'll update on those soon. Also at some point, I'll take a photo of the current condition of my skin, just so you can see if there's been further improvements after prolonged use of the masks. I can't do that right now because the Pooker's mum has run off to the Olympics with our camera xD.
Btw, I have since noticed that the Black Pearl masks seem to be disappearing off the shelf faster than any of the other varieties. If any of you is the culprit, please refer to my 1st paragraph, and stop buying my stuffs. It'll make you ugly. xD

Damage: CAN$10.99 - CAN$19.99 for a box of 10
What would Kanye say?: "One of the best masks of all time"

2. The Body Shop Vitamin E Intense Moisture Cream and Nourishing Night Cream
Vitamin E Intense Moisturizer - Vitamin EVitamin E Nourishing Night Cream - Vitamin E
One day, during an "omg I've run out of moisturiser and I forgot to buy any!!" moment, I found a sample tub of The Body Shop's Vitamin E Intense Moisture cream that I'd received as a GWP and subsequently forgot about. In my desperation, I put it on, not expecting much, after all, I've tried their tea tree oil range before...
My skin practically sang hallelujah when I put it on.
It felt like I was rubbing...pure silky moisture onto my skin (omg so cliched!). My skin gets itchy, dry and flaky in the winter months, this cream left me with soft, completely moisturised skin. That moisturised feeling lasts all day even when I'm huddled next to the heater whimpering from the cold. It doesn't leave a greasy film, nor has it broken me out or clogged my pores.
Their website says that it contains organic olive oil, shea butter and vitamin E wheat germ oil, what do I know, I did law. I'll leave it up to people like Russianfortunecookie to figure out the chemical side of these things. I do know that it contains Dimethicone and Cyclomethicone, which gives it that silky feeling and gel-like consistency, therefore people who are allergic to, or dislike silicone in their skincare products should probably skip this one. However, if you're friends with silicone, it means that this cream can double as a primer for foundation.
I use this in the morning after the Vitamin E serum, which I like but is not really a life changer.
I was so impressed with the day cream I went out n got me a tub of the night cream. The night cream is a lot richer and denser than the day cream. It's quick thick in the tub, probably as a result of the cocoa butter, but really melts once it's on your face. I am an absolute grease ball, but with this cream, I wake up with no visible oil on my face, it just feels soft and moisturised.

Damage: $20 for the intense moisture cream and $16 for the night cream
What would Chuck Norris say?: "Chuck Norris destroyed the periodic table because he only recognises the element of surprise"

3. Vichy Normaderm Anti-Blemish Intensive Treatment Cream
Normaderm Anti-Blemish Intensive Treatment Cream - Moisturizers
This is honestly the only spot treatment I've tried that delivers noticeable results overnight. It contains 2% Salicylic Acid, and on top of controlling the breakout it also speeds up the healing process. I feel that the majority of acne treatments on the market are too strong, they actually burn your skin and that's why often times you're left with a dark mark where the spot used to be. The Vichy cream, on the other hand, is quite mild, but really does its job MINUS the dryness and dark marks that you'll get from other acne treatments. In my own use, I've found that if I catch the spot early enough in it's development, and put this on immediately, by the next day the skin will be flat again with little or no redness. If it's already a full blown mofo with it's own shadow n everything, applying this cream twice a day (it can be used under makeup with NO pilling!!!!), gives you less inflammation and redness in approx 2-3hours and total control within a day. By the 2nd day it should start healing, and you can use it less often and start using things like face masks to fade and heal the leftovers.
I know that it seems to be rather pricey for such a small amount but honestly it'll last you for frikken ever. It has a narrow, almost pin point opening, which allows you squeeze out a tiny amount just enough to pat onto the pimple.

Damage: CAN$14-$20 wait for the 3 for 2 specials!
What would Vichy say?: "Mario Badesco can bite my blue ass."

4. Lush Angels on Bare Skin

A cult item that needs no introduction. I braved the smell of the Lush store that threatened to assimilate me into part of the Borg Lush collective. Resistance was indeed futile. Omg, ok I promise! no more Star Trek references!!!
I'd bought this on Temptalia's and the Muse's rave reviews, I proceeded to use it every day, and to my disgust it broke me out in a mass of white heads. I then banished it to the naughty corner of the bottomest drawer. However, as is the nature of things like this, I subsequently took it back out for round two, this time I used it only once a week. Success!!! no break out!!! just gorgeous, soft, smooth skin!!!
It contains ground almonds and kaolin clay, together they buff away all dead skin, lumps n bumps on your face, suck out all the muck from ur pores, and leaves your skin heavenly smoooooooth xD It's not a foaming cleanser, it's more of an exfoliator or scrub, however, unlike other scrubs, it doesn't leave your face taunt and dry. Actually, it almost feels like it leaves an oily film on your face, but once you dry your face off, all you'll feel is soft, smooth, skin that almost feels like you've applied moisturiser to it!
I now use this twice a week, it has not broken me out again, I've had less break outs, and on the days that I use it, I definitely notice my foundation going on MUCH smoother.
It IS a bit messy to use because, you have to break off a piece from the roll, and mix it with a bit of water to form a paste before you can apply it to your face. Also I'll recommend using this in the shower as bits of crushed almond and lavender seeds DO tend to get into your hair when you rinse, however, the results are just SO worth the extra schlep.
I believe Lush gives out quite generous samples at their free standing stores, so if you're curious, do try it out!

Damage: $10.50 per 100g
What would Robbie say: "So when I'm lying in my bed, thoughts running through my head, and I feel that love is dead, I'm loving angels instead."

So those are a few of my favourite things, what are yours? Do tell me, as I'm always on the look out for new things to love xD.

Cargo 50% off haul and The Body Shop blush review

OMG. I finally do a beauty related post. I'm sure all my beauty readers have long abandoned me as this was turning more and more into a cooking blog >.<
Don't leave!!! I promise I'll do more beauty posts!!!
So by now I'm sure everyone knows that Cargo is pulling out of Sephora stores and thus all their products have been reduced to 50% of their regular price. Being Asian, a good deal pulled me in even though I've officially declared Sephora to be the root of all evil.
So what did I buy?(so far)

This!

Cargo Colour Eyeshadow Palette in Barcelona.
A look inside.

Swatches

Sephora describes the colours as: Shimmering Periwinkle; Matte Royal Purple; Matte Vibrant Violet and a Pale Teal Sheen. I'm unedumacated so I'm probably wrong, but I didn't find any of the colours in the palette to be 'matte' in any way. Their finish reminded me more of MAC's veluxe pearls. All four colours carried an equal amount of..er...sheen? damn I am just not in the know how to describe colours and finishes! Although you can't see it, the teal contains a gold shimmer which is so pretty in the light!! The royal blue is gorgeous too, although I have absolutely no idea where I'd wear that to =.=". Yes I'm extremely guilty of buying things which I have no intention of using hee! The packing is a bit bulkier than what I'd like, but I do love the clear lucite and the huge mirror included. At $14 it's a steal, I'm gonna go back tomorrow and pick up a couple more but definitely in more subdued colours xD.

On another note, a couple of you seem to be interested in the blushes I picked up from The Body Shop, so I thought I'd do a some swatches and do a mini review.

Let's start with the marblized blush trio, I got mine in Warm Sunset. Size wise, it's quite a lot bigger than a standard MAC blush and is approx the same size as a MAC Shape & Sculpt powder.

A closer look, swirled together is a light peachy pink, a ruddy red orange and a dirty brownish bronze (can you tell I suck with describing colours?)

Swatches: From the left: 1. mixed together; 2. lightest colour; 3. medium colour; 4. darkest colour.

Closeup of the mixed colour.

As you can see from the swatches, these blushes are really pigmented. You really have to apply with a light hand and blend like crazy, otherwise you'll end up with clown cheeks lol. They remind me of MAC msfs with a lot more pigmentation, and none of the frostiness. For me, this would be more of a "summer" colour, as I dislike peachy tones during the winter months because it looks really fake on me when I have no tan. I prefer cool pinks during winter to give that 'flushed from the cold' look xD.
The second blush I got from The Body Shop is their Roseflower blush in Fuschia.

Smells just like roses. No seriously, it's rose scented! but the scent is light enough not to be grandmotherly.

Swatches

It reminded me of a slighty pinker version of NARS Super Orgasm actually, with the large flecks of gold glitter. Nunu no likey Super Orgasm, thankfully the glitter is just from the overspray used in the rose pattern and would soon disappear. It's not full on shimmer, yet it's not matte, it's got a bit of a glowy sheen to it.

On mah cheeks!Really natural, just the type of flushed from the cold look I like during winter!

Roseflower blush with Dior Rose Diamond skin shimmer as highlight. @.@ glowy! Excuse the spot on my cheek, we've been eating hot pot lately n I've got hot pot face, but c'mon this was my bare face with zero foundation and cover up! I owe it all to the My Beauty Diary masks that I've been using every 2nd night. It's still the shizniz!

And that's it for my round up of Body Shop blushes. I hope I've encouraged some of you to spend some money xD.
Ta.

First award, tag, small haul and food pr0n

My first blog award!! Nat gave me an "I <3 your blog" award! Awww, thank you sweetie xD you love me! you reeeally love me!! When I first started this blog, I didn't think anyone would even read it let alone love it xD. It was gonna be my equivalent of JLo's Oscar worthy performance in El Cantante.

She also tagged me to find things around my house that was pink! Ahahahahaa! I've always vigorously denied that I like anything pink, thus I was pretty sure I wouldn't find anything. I've been proven wrong lol.
Exhibit 1:

Exhibit 2:

Ok, so I do have a lot of pink stuff xD. I tag everyone who reads my blog with Purple my favourite colour!

Went to The Body Shop the other day and hauled a little bit xD

Snacks from Japan and cheap Xmas chocolates!Milka!!my fav!!but somehow it tastes different to the ones I had in Europe... Does anyone else find North American sweets to be much sweeter than their European counterparts?

Lastly, we went to a Japanese restaurant close to our house called Toyotomi for dinner the other night. Very reasonable prices. If it weren't for the Hamachi sashimi, dinner for the two of us would've only been around $35.
Salmon Tartar with tempura bits

I'd already gobbled up 2 pieces of the negitoro (my fav and must have!) and those were the 2 last pieces of sashimi in the Pookie's plate.

Some roll. Tuna and avocado topped with eel tempura.

Another roll. Spicy salmon topped with avo and eel. We'd only realised we had eel on everything when the food came. It's ok we like eel xD.

Food was pretty good and prices were very reasonable. There was one thing we were after that they didn't have on the menu...

Uni!!!
Yeah, yeah it looks like cracked open brains but it's really good!
So how is everyone doing in their first week back at work? I'm still not used to the pace yet, I'd barely begun to relax into holiday mode and it's over already >.< I want my month long school holidays back! Well at least it's not snowing...
More posts coming up! Gonna be putting all my new toys to work!
