A short video to make up for my lack of presence around this here blog:
As you can see, I clearly have no idea what I'm doing.

More things your Asian parents say
Due to the tremendous support for my first "Parents say the Darnedest things" post, I shall hereby share some further pearls of wisdom from our dearest Asian parents.
1. "Don't bathe immediately after eating."
Thank you Anita for reminding me of this one! Somehow, lying prostrate in tub of H2O immediately following a meal will result in...indigestion, which will result in death of course.
2. "Don't run or jump around after a meal or you'll get appendicitis."
My mum told me that big movements after a meal will make the food in your intestine FALL into your appendix where it will rot, thus causing it to explode resulting in...death. She was deadly serious about this and gave really graphic descriptions of the outcome. I was sohorrified impressed that to this day, I won't even lift a hand to do the dishes after dinner due to fear of the itis.
Truth: in 2nd year university, a friend of mine had appendicitis and my first question upon seeing her was "were you jumping around after eating?"
3. "Don't sit too close to the TV or you'll go blind."
Also applies to looking too long at the computer screen or reading books held too close to your eyes. Unless said book is your medical/law/accountancy textbook, if so, you'll have to read it even if your electricity has gone out and all you have is a lone candle. Mummy and daddy will buy you a Braille version when you go blind.
4. "You are _____(good thing) because you take after me."
Cos like Fergie, you got it from yo mama. If you're tall, thin, fair and beautiful, it's because your Asian parents bestowed you with their faultless genetics. If you've got kinky hair, stumpy legs, pimples and a tiny bit of happy fat, they don't know where you came from, the hospital must've pulled a fast switcheroo when their perfect child was born.
5. "You are _____(bad thing) because you learnt it somewhere!"
That is because Asian parents have no bad habits. End of discussion.
6. "Don't shake your legs or you'll be poor."
There was a proverb thing that went with this, something like "Human sway fortune thin, Tree sway leaves fall". When I see people shaking their legs in public transport, I really want to walk up to them and tell them to stop shaking or their fortune will get thin.
7."Don't poke your bellybutton or you'll have diarrhoea."
It will be painful and...explosive...
8. "Tampons will break your virginity."
Only said to girls for obvious reasons. If you use tampons, you won't be a virgin any more and the Harvard graduate doctor won't marry you. I don't even know where the reasoning for this one came from, but chances are if you're Asian, your parents DID NOT give you the birds and the bees talk any way so you wouldn't have had the chance to ask.
9. "Did you greet auntie and uncle?"
This dreaded phrase. This bane of my existence. The embarrassment associated with these simple words can only be understood by another Asian child who has been subjected to this cruel and inhuman punishment. It's not that I'm unfriendly or don't the the initiative in greeting people, it's just that my mother will ALWAYS beat me to the punch line! There'll be times when I'm just opening up my mouth to vocalise my greeting, she would've uttered those dratted words already. It's like a race, to embarrass me.
It doesn't help that majority of the time, we have no idea who the person we're greeting actually is. Are we really expected to know the wife of the 4th uncle of my cousin twice removed who recently graduated from Harvard medicine and has just married a lawyer who graduated from Cambridge?
The conversation usually goes like this:
Mum: "Did you say hello to auntie and uncle yet ah?!"
Child ADULT offspring: "Yes."
Mum: "When?"
ADULT offspring: "When I arrived."
Mum: "Didn't hear, say so softly like mosquito ga"
ADULT offspring: "...I said it already."
Mum: "Say again la, say loudly, Uncle is old and cannot hear so good, you say so softly."
ADULT offspring: *finds nearest man hole and jumps in*
The whole time, the person you're suppose to greet will watch you unwaveringly and expectantly...
Hi, my name is Nunu, I am 26yrs old and my mum tells me to greet people.
10. "Did you eat yet?"
Even if you come home at 11:30PM, your Asian mum will ask you this question. If you reply in the affirmative, she will then proceed to make you give her a run down on precisely what it was that you ate. Regardless of the answer, she will tut, get up and bring you a bowl of soup that's been simmering since 5:00AM to supplement your "un-nutritious" meal.
Asian parents, you can't live with them, you can't live without them.

Parents say the darnedest things
Asianic Parentis, The Asian Parent, the evolved and final form of all Asian adults. If you're lucky enough, and your Asian parent left the motherland long ago, or better yet, was born in a Western country, you might not have been submitted to most of these pearls of wisdom.
1. "If you drink Coke, you will cough."
I don't know how this one came about. At some point I asked my mom why drinking Coke (or any soda for that matter) will make me cough. She mumbled something about the high sugar content giving you phlegm and the fact that it's cold. She then gave me stank eye along with "I only tell you because I love you, if you don't want to listen then forget it" cue a lecture on how she "sacrificed so much for me", how they were working from the age of 6, etc etc etc.
2. "Don't sit on warm public seat"
My grandmother and my aunts are inevitably armed with folded newspapers every time we have to take public transport. Whenever a seat frees up on the bus, they'll swoop upon it, unfold their paper, fan the seat for a few seconds, lay the paper over the seat and then proceed to sit on top of it. When I asked why they did this, they said it's to "keep out the previous person's bum breath." Yes they really said that.
This saying is in direct contravention with...
3. "Don't sit on cold surface"
I have yet to figure out the reasoning behind this one. No one has yet been able to give me a straight answer. I suspect it has something to do with infertility due to your hoo ha being in contact with a cold surface.
4. "Don't sleep with fan on"
Also known as "fan death". Sleeping facing a fan means certain death of the sleeping person. If pressed for proof of this phenomenon, they will loudly proclaim that it happened to the daughter of the aunt of the friend of Mrs. Chan.
5. "If you eat chocolate (or any junk food for that matter) you will grow pimples."
This is because chocolate, and all junk foods are "yeet hay" (hot air) and this in turn will cause pimples. The only counter action is this is to drink copious amounts of "leung cha" (cool tea). Don't let the name fool you, this "cool tea" has no correlation whatsoever to your Lipton Iced Tea, it's made out of eye of newt, and toe of frog, along with insect larvae, centipedes, dead skin scrubbed from the back of an elephant with 6 legs and I don't want to know what else. You'll smell it from a block away and the smell lingers for weeks. Only when you drink it will you realise that the horrid smell does not compare with the vile taste.
6. "If you don't exercise, you won't grow taller."
As a result of this threat, I used to be on the track team and swam daily. When I asked my parents why I'm still the size and shape of a teapot, they said it's because I was a picky eater. This is in direct contravention of their claims that I eat so much that I'll fat "to death". My mum also tuts and sighs at me whenever I wear jeans claiming that I exercised too much as a child and therefore have tree trunks for thighs -__-"
7. "____to death!"
The gruesome end to any undesired physical activity. Wear brand new pair of heels? "Wear those will PK to death!" eat 1 more chicken wing? "Will fat to death!" Wear shorts outside in Spring? "Will cold to death!"
I wonder if we can argue that if they use the chicken feather duster on us, we'll hurt "to death".
8. "If expose bellybutton, will catch a cold."
Usually expressed this way, "Don't expose bellybutton, will catch cold to death."
9. "If sneeze, must put on clothes."
It doesn't matter if it's mid summer in Africa and you're sitting inside a sauna. If you sneeze, you must put a jacket on. Otherwise you will catch a cold "to death".
10. "I hit you because I love you."
Said while they're gleefully swinging down the chicken feather duster with the cracked bamboo handle onto your buck naked bum. In public.
In addition to these, my mother also used to come up with the oddest "facts" that she made me believe until I was well into my adulthood. Things such as "drink this and you'll be prettier/taller/thinner", and "if you have a stomach ache, your stomach will feel cold, you must rub it with this *cue Chinese medicated oil which smells suspiciously of menthol* until your stomach heats up, then you'll be better." and "if you sleep with wet hair, you'll have migraines later on in life (Thanks to Superwoolu and Swtexcape for reminding me of this one!). She also kept the local supermarket pretty well informed of when I had my period and does not believe in the existence of dinosaurs.
Despite the decades of trauma and embarrassment, I do love my Asian parents, they brought me up to be a reasonably well balanced individual who respects her elders and loves her veggies.
For sure in my teenage years, I found life with them...frustrating...to say the least, now they are an endless source of amusement - how can you not laugh when your mother replies that she sees "trees" in front of her when she's lost and you ask her what landmarks does she see?
Omg, I must be turning into an Asian parent!

Awards, 5 facts about me and the greatest Ramen restaurant of all time.
Awards from Superwoolu!!! Every time I read this girl's blog, I end up breaking into fits of giggles. For some reason in my (obviously) flawed mind, I keep thinking we've got a lot of similarities, from childhood experiences with Yes! magazine to taste in shoes xD
1. I am terrified of clowns. I can sort of restrain myself from freaking out too much now that I'm an adult, but heaven forbid if one just pops out at me suddenly. Even Ronald McDonald creeps me out. Blame it on my parents using Chinese opera masks to scare me to sleep as a child. Yeah, I have no idea why they did that T.T
2. I cannot stand it when people butcher the English language. I refuse to acknowledge that "alright" is a word and that a sentence can start with "because". I cannot punctuate to save my life but I am obsessed with spelling and grammar.
3. I can speak fluent Dutch. I have no idea why. I spent 5 years learning French, lived in France and yet all I can say is "I'd like a ham and cheese sandwich please". I didn't even intentionally learn Dutch and yet I can speak, read and understand it with an 80% proficiency. Deep down I'm just a barbarian.
4. I have a "thing" for Dr. Gregory House. The bf and I have these conversations where he does Horatio Caine one liners ("We never close. *puts sunglasses on*") and I do House one liners ("Who's here with a runny nose? it's a cold! it will get better. Go home."). Omg we have an odd relationship -___-
5. I don't eat pork. Yeah, the moment Chinese people hear this, they're all like "why??!!!". I grew up in a largely Jewish neighbourhood, most of my friends were Jewish, and Pesach was practically a school holiday. As a result I grew up not eating pork. The smell and taste of pork actually makes me want to throw up. My parents also do not eat pork. The only way I'll ingest anything pork related is if it's pork bones used to make soup xD. I've had a lot of people aggressively tell me that if I'm not Muslim then I must eat pork, I introduce them to my middle finger.

Onto food!
We'd heard that this absolutely amazing ramen house had recently opened up on Robson and we of course had to check it out to see if it lived up to all the hype.

The bf had the "Limited Quantity" Toroniku Shoyu Ramen (pork cheeks).
My Shiro ramen.
Can you tell I'm happy?
Verdict: Kintaro? who's Kintaro? This place has THE BEST ramen we've ever had in anywhere! Between the two of us that includes...over 10 countries!
I don't even eat pork and I still drank ALL the soup! It was so rich and flavourful, and the noodles were perfect! Omg looking at these photos make me wanna go back!
Apparently they're part of a very famous international chain and this branch is the first one to open in Canada.
Sheila and Chyi, when you girls get here I am SO bringing you here!

Mea culpa, Mea culpa.
...Yes, I am still alive and well...but my fridge...not so much.
The NEW fridge which came with our NEW condo has apparently fallen victim to a one in a million, never seen in 11 years, manufacturer's defect.
I was starting to think that Zuul (cue Ghostbuster's theme song) was living in our fridge when we kept hearing these moaning, creaking and clicking noises coming from the fridge each time we closed the door.
So anyways, the repair guy comes, tell us that he needs to order a new motor and that he'll be back in a week to install it.
He came in yesterday, spent 3 hours tinkling about, and at the end, informs us that our fridge is broken. Um...yeah...we kinda gathered that, and you're here to fix it right?
Apparently, even with the new motor, our fridge was not working.
He has to order yet another spare part and the EARLIEST it's gonna be ready is by Thursday, and in the meantime, we'll just have to be without a fridge.
Well...why can't he just put the old motor back in?I'll take Zuul noises and working fridge over silence and no fridge. He said he can't because it'll take another 2 hours work to put the old one back in.
...
Luckily we had not yet done our weekly grocery shopping, so we ended up throwing some stuff out, driving some over to friends and family and putting some in a cooler box which we've left on our patio.
So until such time as I have a working fridge, there will be no Nunu's Kitchen posts, as I'm sure you don't wanna see how I make Miso soup from a tub...which is what we're having for dinner tonight...and maybe a tea egg...
I know, I know, a broken fridge does NOT give me an excuse not to do beauty posts. My 10 day Beauty Diary mask challenge is done and I'll be posting about that shortly. I also managed to scavenge some Urban Decay at 30% regular price so I'll be doing an EOTD "some time" in the future...
In the meantime, PLEASE DON'T UNSUBSCRIBE ME!!!!!
